Francesco Stelluti, Persio (Rome, 1630)
The title page of this study by Stelluti displays the emblem of the Academy of the Lynx. The crest with three bees is that of the powerful Barberini family.
This work is a critical edition of the poems of Persius, an obscure Roman poet, prepared by Stelluti. Stelluti added scholarly annotations on antiquarian, philological and scientific topics. Scientific digressions include a discussion of the lynx and of bees (which they studied under a microscope). This book illustrates how members of the Academy of the Lynx were familiar with classical texts. They integrated their study of the classics with new discoveries in the sciences.
